Hong Kong and British culture
It is funny how you experience Hong Kong. While the British have given the area to China you will experience the British culture here very strongly. This isn’t the China you experience in the mainland, some things are missing and some are replaced with Western style. Taxi drivers want to speak English with you for example.
All the time I am feeling that I am in London instead, just that there more Chinese restaurants than in London.
So, Hong Kong isn’t China just like that, Hong Kong is Hong Kong and nothing else. It is a unique place.
So here I am
Indeed, I am once again in China. And again this is rather short visit but it is refreshing to have a holiday and spend it in China. This time I have been able to see two new cities, Beijing and Guangzhou – of course it would take much longer time to actually see and experience them completely but even a short time will give you a nice view for those two cities. So different when you compare them to each other; Beijing is traditional, historical and much more “serious” city compared to Guangzhou or Shanghai. Guangzhou is then following much more the style Shanghai has already shown me, glorious, sparkling city full of lights and action. What is missing is the numerous high-rising buildings across the city, which you come familiar in Shanghai.
When boarding the plane in Beijing, the weather was just like in Finland – windy and cold; a real Autumn weather, beginning of the Winter. Three hours later you walk out of the airport in Guangzhou to the evening weather and experience something warmer than Finnish Summer. In the Southern parts of the China, it is feeling like people are much happier and joyful – the service is given with a wide smile compared to the Beijing. Must be the weather? Service is always very punctual and perfect in China but in the South, it has the additional joy in it. Makes a Finnish person to smile widely too.
It is amazing how you get used to the little things, how you will be remembered when you return to the lobby the next day to have again some tea while you will read the emails. How they remember which kind of tea you liked – maybe it is uncommon for a foreigner to drink traditional Chinese tea or maybe foreigners are still a little bit rare in here. Or then it is my ability to surprise people by being able to say Xiexie (Thank you) – at least I surprised someone at the breakfast who wasn’t expecting that from me.
Fangfang is giving a lecture at her college, she is teaching Mandarin for exchange students. And me.
I will take a taxi from the hotel to meet her at the college when her classes are over, it should be in one hour – I am well prepared as I have the address written in Chinese, I shouldn’t find myself in some other city for example.
There is always the same peaceful feeling coming to me when I return to China; when you are in the environment where you are truly a foreigner, where you cannot understand any written text or spoken language. When you can experience everything as new and learn new things all the time.
Life
I received the following poem months ago but I didn’t know that I will be reading it with different view few months later …
the furthest distance in the world
is not between life and death
but when i stand in front of you
yet you don’t know that
i love youthe furthest distance in the world
is not when i stand in front of you
yet you can’t see my love
but when undoubtedly knowing the love from both
yet cannot be togetherthe furthest distance in the world
is not being apart while being in love
but when plainly can not resist the yearning
yet pretending
you have never been in my heartthe furthest distance in the world
but using one’s indifferent heart
to dig an uncrossable river
for the one who loves youthe furthest distance in the world – Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941)
This poem has been circulating the Internet many times already and it has been translated many times. I am not sure but this translation could be actually from Chinese to English and original wasn’t in Chinese … anyway … it is not about how it is translated to different languages and when but the true importance is the meaning inside, in the words.
Sometimes distance is too much … Unfortunately, I experienced that. At least I still have my memories.
Note: I posted this only after I felt that it is time to post this. I didn’t feel like that almost a month ago. That is the reason why it appeared suddenly just now in here and is dated to March 5th, 2007 while it is written almost a month later.
A month in my life
I have been quite busy lately. Xinyue was in Finland for one month and of course I wanted to take every possible freetime to spend with her. Also, in the office, I have been extremely busy. So many things are happening now at the same time that it just keeps me very busy during the days.
Xinyue enjoyed the time in Finland, we were actually also able to visit the Chinese New Year celebrations at the local university. And also we were able to spend some time in the countryside near Tampere as well time in Tampere area. There would have been so much to do but somehow the time just flew very fast. I guess it is true that time will fly when you are having fun.
She just flew to China yesterday and has arrived safely. Now there is again a distance between us in the form of physical distance and also a time difference. It will probably take some time to get used to that and remember that things are now again going to happen in two places across the world. I have to remember to start thinking about time difference.
Xinyue coming to Finland
It is now 15 days until Xinyue will arrive to Finland and I am beginning to think that we will not see any snow before that day. And the longer we will go with this season, the better it would be if we wouldn’t get any snow as then it will just take too long before Spring will arrive.
Flu
Well, the weather is getting a little bit colder now. And I have a terrible flu. Not very funny when your thoughts are not running as smoothly as you are used to. Have to put extra effort to remember things and trying to remember what I was doing five minutes ago.
I decided that I will skip the trip to Seattle in November. I have to put my effort in something else and cannot just fly to Seattle for that time. Last year we (a group of “crazy” people loving to fly) went to Stockholm and this trip would have been quite nice as well but well … you cannot always get what you want. I am sure the others will have very nice time there. Hopefully, it will not rain too much.
I am actually looking forward a little vacation in near future. Just keep an eye with this site and you will again see some travel photos where I am travelling.
Summer is still here
Well, I have been a little bit lazy updating my blog. Nothing special has been happening, summer is still around here and we actually haven’t received very much rain lately. Yesterday the temperature was again around 25 Celsius degrees (77 Fahrenheit degrees) and we were able to enjoy the summer still while most of the people are now starting to return to the offices and workplaces.
The latest movies I have seen is The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, which is a movie containing quite simple plot but is surprisingly good. Reviewers actually didn’t like this movie but I did. It seems that most of the time I am quite different from the reviewers; I like movies, which they don’t.
